A pool clarifier is a chemical that clumps together microscopic debris, like silt, oils, and dead algae, into larger particles that a pool filter can trap. It’s used to clear up cloudy water that isn’t dealt with by the filter alone. The clarifier is added to the pool water, and after it has bonded the particles together, you will need to run it through the filter for at least 12 hours, or until the water becomes clear again.

Whenever you’re facing cloudy water, you should consider using a clarifier. The clarifier should be used once a week, if needed, while the filter is running continuously during pool treatment. However, be cautious, as excessive clarifier can lead to murky water and bacterial growth.

You can use a pool flocculant instead of a pool clarifier. Much like a pool clarifier, pool floc works by collecting smaller particles and forming them into bigger ones; however, these particles do not get filtered out of your pool water. Instead, they will sink to the bottom of the pool and need to be manually vacuumed out.

While flocculants do work faster than clarifiers, they require more manual work. You also can’t use them if you have a cartridge or DE filter (unless you can bypass your filter while vacuuming). Floc works well with sand filters.

You should wait 20 to 30 minutes after adding a pool clarifier before swimming. During this time, the pump should be running to circulate the chemical and allow it to work correctly. It’s also recommended to test the water to ensure it’s balanced before swimming.

You first want to clean your pool, as well as remove any algae, as pool clarifier will not remove algae. Test and balance your water to ensure it’s within the correct ranges. Increase your pool circulation to churn up the cloudy water from the bottom of your pool before adding your clarifier, following the manufacturer’s instructions.

Triangle

Yes, you can use a pool clarifier with any filter, including sand, cartridge, or DE filters. However, with a cartridge or DE filter, you may need to clean the filter more often than usual.

Many pool clarifiers are specifically designed for use with saltwater systems, helping to clear cloudy water by binding fine particles together so that the filter can remove them.
