Pool Skimmers

A skimmer is a critical component of any pool cleaning and circulation system, primarily responsible for removing debris from the water's surface before it can sink to the bottom.

  1. Through-the-Wall Skimmer

The in-ground or above-ground skimmer is an integral part of the pool's plumbing and filtration system.

    • Function: Located in an opening at the top edge of the pool wall, this device draws water and floating debris (like leaves, insects, pollen, and oils) into the filtration system. It acts as the first line of defense for water quality.
    • Mechanism:Water is pulled through a hinged weir door (a floating flap) that creates a uniform surface current, maximizing skimming efficiency. The debris is trapped in an internal, removable skimmer basket, protecting the main pump from large objects.

  2. Hand/Leaf Skimmer (Manual Tool)

The hand skimmer, also commonly referred to as a leaf skimmer or leaf net, is a manual cleaning tool used by the pool owner.

    • Function: This consists of a fine or coarse mesh net attached to a pole. It is used to manually scoop or skim floating debris, as well as objects resting just beneath the water surface, that may have been missed by the mechanical skimmer.
    • Application:It provides quick, targeted removal of visible debris and is essential for daily or pre-swim cleanup.

In both forms, the automated plumbing component and the manual cleaning tool—the skimmer's core purpose is to actively clean the water's surface, ensuring a clear and hygienic swimming environment.
