Cover clips are hardware accessories designed to secure a pool’s winter cover by fastening the cover material to the pool frame or the top rail of an above ground pool. When done correctly, they keep the cover tight, prevent wind from lifting the edges, and minimize the accumulation of debris under the cover.

You should install cover clips during your pool’s closing process for the winter. After you’ve placed your winter cover, install the clips around the perimeter to hold the cover in place. They should remain installed throughout the winter and be removed when you reopen the pool in the spring. Using clips helps maintain tension and protection throughout the colder months.

Installation of cover clips may vary by brand, but the typical steps are:

  1. Spread the winter cover evenly over your pool, and secure it with a cable or winch.
  2. Starting at one section, attach a clip by clamping it to the top rail of the pool over the top of the cover material so that it's held securely.
  3. Continue around the pool at regular intervals, ensuring the cover remains taut and all clips are evenly spaced.
  4. Check that the edge of the cover is tight and the clips are fully engaged, so that wind cannot easily lift the cover.

Most cover clips are reusable from year to year, assuming that they remain in good condition. However, if you notice any damage, brittleness, or deformation, you should replace them to ensure the integrity of the cover.
